According to fox 5 New York, the New York City bill would prohibit landlords from conducting background checks on new tenants.
At least 30 of the 51 council members have agreed to support the "Fair Chance Housing Act."
Stanley Richards, Deputy CEO of the Fortune Society, supports eliminating criminal background checks, saying that housing discrimination has a major impact in New York City because of the large number of people with criminal records, the 11% of the population have it. He declares that the fact that you have the right to check someone's criminal record to rent to them is demonizing that person and that we should stop being judged for the worst moment of our lives.
Undoubtedly, this law opens the way to debate because, on the one hand, prejudices against people must be left behind, while on the other, you could end up being a neighbor of someone you don't want.
